Peer bullying

A major problem in schools represents intimidation or bullying.

Bullying is a form of violence that most often reflects in the shocks, threats, criticism, damage and destruction of objects and property of another student, mocking about the appearance, family, unreal gossiping, insults, exclusion from group activities, isolation, a requirement for the money ...

In most cases regarding violence we have on one side the perpetrator and on the other the victim. Perpetrators and victims can be of either gender, boys and girls of different ages. Gender differences also reflect different methods and causes of aggressive behavior. Covert forms of aggression may be directed to the surroundings, other individuals, or yourself.

A family is a very important factor in the development of the child. Education, behavior patterns of parents have a significant impact on the potential development of aggressive behavior in children. In the process of schooling child's teachers, school and peers play an important role too. At school, aggressive behavior is mainly expressed through psychological and verbally aggressive behavior.

Children who are perpetrators of violence are mostly confident, crave for power and control over others. At the same time, they can also be very aggressive and destructive to oneself and have a poor self-control. They are not interested in  feelings of others, they are impulsive and violent. The school is not their top priority. They may be victims of violence, especially family.

Although every child can be the victim, they mostly choose  weak, helpless, shy, maybe even a child with special needs, gifted child or a stranger. These children are usually more quiet, less confident, they may be from lower social classes, with fewer friends, ...

Children who are bullied by peers are very reluctant to speak about violence, because of shame, humiliation, fear of perpetrator's retaliation, own sense of guilt. Victims of violence are less noticeable, have the fear of going to school, frequent morbidity rate, closing within themselves, have damaged or destroyed school supplies (notebooks, textbooks).

Online violence - Cyberbullying

Online bullying also known as Cyberbullying is on the rise because of a daily use of the Internet, computer and phone. A specific feature of this kind of violence is that it can hide the perpetrator because of the anonymity provided by the Internet and communication appliances.

Cyberbullying is reflected primarily through:

  • E-mail

  • messages (SMS)

  • Social networks - Facebook, Netlog, Twitter, Google+

  • blogs

  • chat rooms

  • forums

  • Internet games, in the form of hostile behavior towards other people, false identities, abusive usernames and passwords, publication and dissemination of untruths, posting inappropriate photos and, consequently ridicule, mockery, ...

According to Article 297 of the Slovenian Penal Code, an individual is criminally responsible for publicly inciting hatred, violence or intolerance.

Modern technology, which many find it much as a tool to cope easier with everyday life also has negative effects, especially in children and adolescents (if we completely ignore the time spent on these devices, lack of movement and an unhealthy lifestyle, such are the consequences by the majority of the population), which grow up with this technology. There are fewer genuine interpersonal relationships and real friendships which are slowly replaced by virtual friends, known only through an Internet connection and communication devices.

When applying modern technology we must all be subjected to certain rules we must abide. The rules must be clear, understandable, visible and respected by all. The rules of behavior on the Internet and communications devices must be placed at home with parents and children together. At school, the rules must be prepared with students, teachers and school management together and hung in a prominent position. This way, everyone knows what the rules of proper behavior on the Internet are and what are the sanctions in case of violations.

Although you can not see the person on the other side of the screen, the damage one can inflict on the other person with online harassment and bullying can be enormous and can leave lifetime scars, and sometimes even pushes one as far as committing a suicide.
